BQ25792: 7.2V Battery charging IC Selection

Part Number: BQ25792
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS566231, BQ24170

Tool/software:

Dear Team,

I am looking for battery charging IC for 7.2V/3Ah battery(2 cells in series) which will take 12V input and give 5V/6A regulated output to the load.

Can you please suggest which IC is good for this requirement?

Best Regards,

Chethan Kumar

  • HI Chethan,

None of TI's chargers include both a dc/dc voltage regulating converter and charging circuitry.  The direct power path chargers pass through the input voltage to the output (system).  The NVDC chargers provide a minimum system voltage at their output and then the output follows the battery voltage up to regulation.  So you will need 2 ICs, one battery charger and one dc/dc converter.  For 3Ahr battery charging with 3A charge current, you could use the BQ24170 followed by a 12V to 5V/6A buck converter like TPS566231.

    Regards,

    Jeff

  • Hi Jeff,

    Thank you for your response.

These 2 ICs will work for our requirement. We will share the schematic for review once it is done.

    Best Regards,
