TPS63802: Peak Current Output Capability

Hello,

I have an application where I'm boosting a 3.6V input to 5V output.
Typically the output current consumption is <1mA however I have peaks of 2.5A continuous that last a few seconds.

I noticed that the description of this IC was that the output maximum is nominally "2A".

Looking at Figure 10-2 of the datasheet it appears like I should be OK to draw 2.5A from the IC and still be within recommended operating specifications. Am I understanding this correctly?

If I attempt to draw more than ~2.6A I would expect the IC's current limit to kick in and not damage the IC.

Am I understanding the functionality of this IC correctly? Any other gotchas?

Hi Joey,

Yes, all your understanding is correct, only thing need be careful is curve attached is based on typical current limit, and the actual minimum current limit in boost mode is about 12.5% lower.

Since it is in boost mode, i think you take 5%-10% derating of output current in the curve for your case is reasonable.

How did you arrive at the 12.5% derate?
If I'm understanding you correctly Figure 102- is based on the 5A Typical Boost Mode Peak Current Limit however the minimum is actually 4A (20% difference)
