BQ79616-Q1: Comparison of measurement made between the MAIN ADC and the AUX ADC

Part Number: BQ79616-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ79616

Tool/software:

Dear TI support,

I would like to ask whether for BQ79616 the detection faults in the measurements of battery cell voltage by comparison of measurement made with the MAIN ADC and in parallel with the AUX ADC is internally performed automatically during normal operation or if it requires the implementation of dedicated diagnostic routines.

Thank you

Best regards

  • Luca,

Yes, they are recorded in the FAULT_COMP_VCCB1/2 registers. See section "8.3.6.4.6 Diagnostic Through ADC Comparison" in the datasheet for details.

    Regards,

    Bo

  • I have two more questions

Is it possible to activate the comparison between the AUX ADC and the MAIN ADC to detect faults in the measurements of battery cell voltage (or temperatures) and continue to use the other features of the BQ79616, such as reading cell voltages and other functionalities while the diagnostic through ADC comparison is not completed yet?

In the document “Safety Manual for BQ7961x-Q1 (SLVAEB0)”, the following note is reported for Safety Mechanism SM100:

"During cell balancing, the battery cell voltage read by the AUX ADC from the CB input pins will be offset and different from the battery cell voltage read by the Main ADC from the VC input pins."
Does this mean that it is necessary to disable the diagnostics (SM100) between AUX ADC and Main ADC during cell balancing?

     Thanks

     Regards

  • Hi

    Do you have any news?

    Thanks

    Regards

  • Luca,

    Sorry about the delayed response.

No. You cannot use other functionalities while the ADC Comparison Diagnostic is underway. The comparison should be relatively short (AUXCELL settling time + one round robin cycle time) and it will not automatically repeat. If cell balancing is active when you start the diagnostic, any cells currently being balanced will likely fail even if nothing is wrong.

    Bo
