TPS43061: load capacity

Part Number: TPS43061
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5122

Tool/software:

Hi team,

May I know if TPS43061 can output 22.5V/7.5A when VIN is 5.4V-8.4V?

not sure if load capacity of TPS43061 is related with external MOS or other things

  • Hi Amber,

Thanks for using the e2e forum.
From controller side, I see no spec violations in this application.

However, with 170W output power, the input current levels would be above 30A in worst case conditions.
For this would I would recommend a multi phase design to share the current.
LM5122 would be more suitable, as it comes with a multi phase synchronization feature.

    Best regards,
    Niklas

  • Hi Nikals,

Thank you for reply. why use multi phase design, does it consider to improve thermal?

  • Hi Niklas

I try to simulate in webench, found webench can't work as report Junction temperature issue. I am afraid if customer can use TPS43061 to get 22.5V/7.5A in actual application.

Can you help check the SCH from customer? I think inductor I sat is too low regarding peak inductor current.

  • Also attach MOS datasheet for check, I think it is ok for me. pls also help check. Thanks

  • Hi Amber,

I agree with you that the inductor rating might be too low.
I calculated the current levels with help of our power stage designer tool.
Here you see that the peak current goes up to 34.5A (without losses!)

This is higher than the inductor rating, so they would need to replace this part.
The MOSFET datasheet says the component can support 50A DC current, but thermal behavior can be a high risk here.
We generally recommend to keep the MOSFET peak currents at 10A max. They can consider placing two low side MOSFET in parallel to share the current.
This should improve the thermal behavior.

If they get the thermals under control, they can stay with TPS43061 in single phase design.
This also depends on the time period the application runs with min VIN and max load.

    Best regards,
    Niklas
