My customer compare TPS62816-q1 and TPS62870-Q1.

TPS62870-q1 has high side current monitoring and TPS62816-Q1 has high side and low side monitoring?

TPS62870 has short circuit protection?

Hello Shoo-san,

Both TPS62870-Q1 and TPS62816-Q1 have high-side and low-side current sensing circuit. Please refer the figures below for the low-side FET negative current limit specs.

TPS62816-Q1:

On the other hand, TPS62870-Q1 have two overcurrent (and/or short circuit) protection option. The default setting is cycle-by-cycle limiting which is described in sec. 8.3.13.1 of the datasheet.

The other option is the hiccup mode which can enable by making HICCUPEN = 1 bit in the CONTROL1 register. The mode of operation is explained in sec. 8.3.13.2.

Yes, both cycle-by-cycle current limiting and hiccup mode protect the converter from short circuit event.

Hi Excel,

My customer want to use non-I2C device. then the default setting is current limit mode. The device in the current limit mode keep on suppling maximum current . they concerned the device TPS62871 supply for might be damaged by continuous 12A current flow. They want to disable the device in case of over current condition. but It looks no way to know the overcurrent condition as PG doesn't get low. Do we have any solution ?

HI Shoo,

As discussed, the PG pin goes low during an over current / short circuit conditions as the output voltage tends to fall below the output regulation. If the device goes into thermal shutdown, PG pin will also goes low as indicated in the datasheet (see fig. below).
