BQ76952: BQ76952: Non-Zero Current Reading (approx. 15mA) with No Load

Part Number: BQ76952

Tool/software:

Hi,

I am using the BQ76952 in my BMS design with a 0.5 mΩ current sense shunt and the recommended 100Ω series resistors / 100 nF differential filter capacitor on the SRP/SRN pins.

I am observing a consistent current reading of approximately 15mA from the BQ76952's AFE, when the system is not connected to any external load.

Could you please provide insights into potential reasons for this non-zero current reading?

  • Is a small quiescent current reading (e.g., 15mA) considered normal or expected behavior for the BQ76952's internal current sense offset or noise floor?
  • What are the common causes for such an offset, and how can I diagnose/mitigate it? (e.g., board leakage, calibration, internal offsets, ADC noise)
  • Hi Michelle,

Yes, this seems to be an expected reading for a 0.5mOhm sense resistor as the offset voltage of the device is ~7.6uV (1LSB). So you would be seeing ~15.2mA as the current reading when no current is flowing through the sense resistor.

Please see section 7.15 of the datasheet.

Please see this thread for further explanation.

    Best,
    Abhijith
