Tool/software:

We are planning to use the UCC28180 for a low cost PFC solution for a buck converter. Looking are its resources I notice that it reference design TIDUAS3A explains that the mode operation is DCM (see below).

For I understand this controller is suggested to operate at CCM mode. How is that so that there is a difference in mode for the same controller for this buck implementation? Can you help me on this. Thank you.

Hello Archie,

The UCC28180 PFC controller is designed to normally operate in Boost-mode PFC.

In reference design TIDA-00652, it has been adapted to operate in Buck-PFC.
I don't know if the UCC28180 is specifically required to operate in DCM when used for Buck-PFC, but the TIDA designers determined that conversion efficiency is maximized when operating in DCM for a high-voltage to low-voltage PFC conversion.

In DCM, switching stresses are reduced; in particular, the free-wheeling diode is relieved of reverse-recovery current.

Hello Archie,

I am not aware of any calculator tool developed by TI for implementing Buck-PFC. All the tools I am aware of are for boost-PFC.
