TPSM63606: The TPSM63606 chipset gets very hot when not under load.

Part Number: TPSM63606

Tool/software:

It was manufactured from +15V to -15V using the tpsm63606 IC.

However, it generates heat even when not loaded,

and when operated up to 2.5A with an electronic load, the heat goes out of control.

I understand to some extent that heat is generated when using the inverting method,

but this time, it is too difficult to dissipate this heat, so the heat dissipation is not good.

What alternatives are there?

  • Hi,

What is the switching frequency set?

    Regards,

    Niranjan

  • The frequency setting is 2.2MHz.

  • Hi,

    1) Can you check the soldering/ try resoldering the device, especially the contact of all four PGND pins? Improper contact can usually cause this.

    2) Are CBOOT and RBOOT shorted, or have you connected any resistance between them?

    3) What is VLDOIN connected to?

    Regards,

    Niranjan

  • 1) Check the soldering condition, or especially resolder the four contacts of the PGND pins. It may be due to poor contact.
--> I made 4 pieces, and they all have the same symptoms, and the soldering of the PGND is not abnormal.

    2) Are CBOOT and RBOOT shorted, or did you connect a resistor between them?
--> If you look at the circuit diagram below, it is shorted right away.

    3) Where is VLDOIN connected?
--> It is connected to GND.

  • Hi Rice,

I couldn't see anything in the schematic that could adversely affect efficiency. Can you send the layout too for review? It is possible that the copper area is too little for proper heat sinking.

As a side note, I would recommend connecting VLDOIN to -VOUT_15V. If the |VOUT| is above 12V we do not recommend connecting this to the VOUT pin. It is better to have it connected to AGND pin (-VOUT_15V).

    Regards,

    Niranjan

  • I connected VLDOIN to AGND(-VOUT_15V), but the heat generation did not change and the 70mA current consumption did not change.

What I'm worried about is that if I use up to 3A, the heat generated at no load + the heat generated when using 3A will be combined to generate heat and cause a shutdown. Also, the device is small, so it's difficult to apply a heat sink.

If the fever is due to the characteristics of the device, I may need to replace the device later. What would be a good device?

  • Hello Rice

Device expert is out of office. Kindly expect some delay in response

    Thank you for your understanding

  • Hi Rice,

The current consumption of 70 mA is on the higher side but it is not unexpected as the device is in FPWM operation. It is switching even at no load and hence it will draw current.

Can you share your layout for review to see if there is room for improvement?

    Regards,

    Niranjan

  • Hello Niranjan Nair

Thank you so much for your response. I doubt it's worth further improvement. This issue was my fault for not understanding the FPWM method. I hope this issue can be closed here. Thank you for your response.
