BQ40Z50-R2: BQ25601 can't charge BQ40Z50 pack after shutdown

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ40Z50, BQ25601

Tool/software:

Hi TI team,

We are using BQ25601 with a battery pack that includes BQ40Z50. When the pack enters shutdown (due to discharge), BQ25601 is unable to start charging.

However, if we set  BQ25601 EN_TERM = 0 and reduce the pre-charge current to 60mA, charging starts.

Why does this happen?
Is there any known limitation or special configuration needed when using BQ25601 with a BQ40Z50-based pack?

Thanks!

  • Hello Tom,

This question has been assigned and will be followed up when possible.

    Thank you,

  • Hello Tom,

There shouldn't be any special configurations in your system. You still have to check the gauge parameters are set according to your system. One reason I think of why this might be happening is because the Gauge is not waking up when the charger is connected. The gauge only wakes up from Shutdown when the voltage on the PACK pin is higher than the threshold set in the gauge. Do you know your voltage on the PACK pin close to the gauge in your system when you cannot charger?  By default, it is set to 3000mV.

The datasheet of the charger seems to indicate the precharge is trying to force a current not a voltage, then your system will have higher voltage drop on the PACK pin at higher precharging currents.
