TPS1HTC30-Q1: Would like to know the time between detecting a output short circuit and initiating a thermal shutdown due to the junction temperature increase

Part Number: TPS1HTC30-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS1HTC100-Q1,

Tool/software:

Hi team,

My customer would like to know the parameters below of TPS1HTC30-Q1 and TPS1HTC100-Q1.

What is the time between detecting a output short circuit and initiating a thermal shutdown due to the junction temperature increase?

Also, how does the junction temperature increase during the thermal shutdown after output short circuit occurs?

My customer assumes the conditions below.

Latch-off mode

Vs=24V

Ta=25 degree

Output: Short to GND

  • Hi team,

    This is just a kind reminder. Please kindly reply my question.

  • Hi Shunsuke,

    The device goes into thermal shutdown based on how heated it gets as a result of the voltage/load current and ambient temperature. Other factors like board layout can also affect thermal performance.

    There is not a set time that we can say the device will go into thermal shutdown after a short circuit; it depends on the power dissipation and whether it causes the board to heat up and meet either relative or absolute thermal shutdown requirements.

    We do have an excel sheet to estimate the temperature rise given a power pulse. You can use this to enter specific power conditions and see if the temperature reaches the absolute thermal shutdown threshold. Please let me know if this would be of interest to you and I can forward it offline.

  • Hi Patel,

    Thank you for the reply. It is good to know that excel sheet your team is creating can solve my customer's problem. However, my customer needs the data ASAP. Originally mu customer provides the data by 4th, August. So could you please kindly consider the measurements by EVM by yourself? I think I have provided the information that is needed for the measurement. Please let me know if additional information are needed.

    Best regards,

  • Hi Patel-san,

    This is just a kind reminder. It is really helpful if you could provide the update.

  • Hi Yamamoto-san,

    The excel sheet has already been created.

    The customer's process of shorting the output to ground like using a cable (sometimes have specific inductance and resistance) can impact the results. Whether the device goes into thermal shutdown is dependent on the current profile so, how high the current gets during the short and for how long.

    Yes, we can test this on the EVM but please consider that results may vary based on exact test conditions.

    Please see my email.

    Thanks,
