TPS27SA08-Q1: Load dump for TPS27SA08 parts

Part Number: TPS27SA08-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS27SA08

We have load dump requirements for ISO 16750-2 Load Dump. Right now, we are designing new controller. We are not clear “the Maximum transient voltage at the supply input (VTR2) of TPS27SA08” in datasheet page 6 (section 7.1 Absolute Maximum Ratings). It is mentioned 54Vdc. Can you please provide the transient voltage pulse (timing) detail? Is the TPS27SA08 handle 58Vdc pulse? Can you please provide guidance for the TVS didoe to protect TPS27SA08 parts?

There are two options:

  1. We survive with a centralized suppression device that clamps to 58 V
  2. We add in our own TVS that clamps to a lower voltage, but then that device needs to take all the energy of the pulse because the centralized suppression would not kick in since we are clamping at a low voltage.

We would prefer not to disconnect the FETs from the battery supply as we are already running into some thermal issues and do not want another FET with more RdsOn to create more heat during normal operation. That means adding a TVS that clamps the voltage to where the FET is not damaged, but then that TVS would take the full brunt of the pulse.
