TPS1653: SHDN Pin Operation

SHDN Pin on the TPS16530

The data sheet on page 13 of the data sheet a pullup resistor on the SHDN pin.  Paragraph 8.39 states:

Low Current Shutdown Control (SHDN)
The internal and the external FET and hence the load current can be switched off by pulling the SHDN pin below a 0.8-V threshold with a micro-controller GPIO pin or can be controlled remotely with an opto-isolator device.  To enable the device, SHDN must be pulled up to at least 2 V. 

So it looks like this pin is internally pulled up and could be pulled low with an open collector circuit interface. Will this configuration work?  The data sheet states "SHDN must be pulled up to at least 2 V". Should this pin be driven with a totem-pole type output that drives SHDN high and low?
