TPS7A85: Operating Range for TPS7A8500

Part Number: TPS7A85

I have a TPS7A8500 designed into my system. The RACO curves in the datasheet only go up to Vin-Vout=1.5V.

I would like to use a 3.3V input with an output of 1.0V.

Question: Will the device still operate properly with a 2.3V differential between the input and the output?

Also, what would my output current be limited to for continuous operation?

  • Hello Michael,

Yes the device will work with 2.3V of headroom. Your output current is going to be limited based on the power dissipation.

You can try to estimate the maximum allowable output current is going to be based on formula 11 in the datasheet assuming the datasheet thetaJA is the same for your board. This is approximately 490mA based on the curve.

If you want to get a more accurate idea, you can use the equations in the next section and read the following application note to learn more on how to take the measurements for temperature https://www.ti.com/lit/an/spra953d/spra953d.pdf?ts=1765402947058
