BQ79731-Q1: Powering BQ79731-Q1 directly - skipping LDO

Part Number: BQ79731-Q1

Hello Experts,

Hi, is it feasible to power the BQ79731 (or BQ79731B) directly rather than provide 12V and allow the chip to regulate the voltage? From what I understand (especially from figure 6-1 of the datasheet), there is an internal preregulator powered from the Vsup pin that provides 6 or 8 V to the rest of the chip. Would simply providing 5.8V to the LDOCAP pin work (if OTP functionality was not desired), presumably with additional decoupling capacitance?

The motivation is that the BQ79731 has to be galvanically isolated from control electronics anyway and it is quite wasteful to use an already relatively inefficient isolated DC/DC convertor to provide power just to turn it into heat in an LDO.

Thanks

Vitek
