Lithium Polymer Battery Charger Choice Help needed

Hi all,

I'm trying to figure out a charger IC to use to charge my 3.7V 1000mAh lithium polymer battery via USB. I want it to recharge within a short time like 2-3 hours but the time is not too critical. I have seen a lot but I'm not sure which one would work best. Any recommendations?

Every time I used this tool, I end up finding Li-ion charger IC. Thus, it is not a Li-Po charger or the UVLO is too high for Li-Po. For the Li-Po batteries, I need to find something that charges at 1/10 of the battery capacity. Thus, I would need a chip that can charge at 100mA.

Li-polymer can be made in various chemistries and the most widely used format is Li-cobalt. Li-cobalt batteries can be charged at 1C rate and up to 4.2V. I am not aware of any special requirement for Li-Po batteries to be charged at 1/10 of the capacity. If you choose to charge at that rate, we have host controlled chargers (vis I2C), like the bq24153A family, which allow you to control the exact charge current and voltage values.

Ok, sorry for the late response, but I found the BQ24232, would this work for my needs even though it is still say it is a lithium ion charger IC? If so, is there anything I should be worried about when using this IC with Li-Po?

You can find out more details about Li-polymer batteries at www.batteryuniversity.com. Your battery's datasheet should explain the maximum current charge current, maximum charge voltage, typically 4.2V, and operating voltage, typically 3.6-3.7V. Unless you have an unusual battery, you should be able to charge it to 4.2V and therefore use the bq24232.

I know that the BQ24232 allows me to program the charging current. Setting the EN1 and EN2 to ground will allow me to charge at 100mA which means 1/10th of the battery capacity. I have used the link you gave me and now know that charger ICs do not care about the type of the charged battery as long as the charging requirement for the battery are met using the battery's chemistry, for example 4.2V for Li-Po.Thus, thanks so much for your help Jeff.
