UCD9224/9248 low switching frequency

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCD9248, UCD9224, UCD7231, UCD7242

Dear all
I use the UCD9224/UCD9248 chip, and I see the datasheet that mention the UCD924/UCD9248 can generate min 15.26Khz(switching frequency) PWM signal.
The datasheets also mention that the diver circuit is needed, like UCD7231 or UCD 7242 circuit.

I have UCD9224EVM board tool available. And I want to generate 15.26 Khz( The lower switching frequency, the better.)
The UCD9224 EVM board  is with UCD7242 circuit. But the UCD7274 only can generate min 300Khz.(switch frequency) PWM signal.
It is too large that can not fit my request.

My question is
(1) If the UCD7274/7231…circuit is really needed? What should I do if I want to generate the 15.26 Khz PWM signal.
(2) If the UCD7274/7231 is not needed, and please advise me the circuit about how to generate 15.26Khz PWM signal.

  • While the datasheet indicates that the UCD92xx controllers are capable of operating with a switching frequency as low as 15.26KHz and up to 2MHz, they are meant to be used for non-isolated POL power conversion applications where most modern designs are running at least 300KHz.  The UCD92xx controllers will function best in the 200 to 1200 KHz range.

Could you please explain your application and why the need to run at such low frequencies?

  • I am doing the plasma cutting machine power supply. Our product need large power to cutting steel. So we can not use high frequency IC, or the heat which is generated during opreation may damaged our parts.(like IGBT)  But we want the frequency can be adjustable by MCUs instead of hardware circuit.

Please advise which IC should I use, thank you!
