Dimming LEDs with small ripple current?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLC5960

Hi,

I have an application where I need to control the intensity of 3 individual strings of LEDs. Each string would have a maximum drive current of 0.5A. But in my application (instrumentation) I need to keep the LED current ripple as low as possible, to maintain the optical illumination as constant as possible, within a few %.

I've used Buck converters in the past to regulate the current to a set value (usually via a sensing resistor). Now I need to be able to alter this current via a digital interface -- like if I had a digital pot as a sensing element. Using PWM would (presumably -- please comment) increase the ripple in the LED current, wouldn't it?

Does TI offer any devices that could offer a computer-programmable led current?
