TPS61097-33 Vout problem

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS61097-33

Hi,

I'm using a TPS61097-33 in a solar/battery powered application where my Vin may vary between 1.5V and 5V. The regulator works great for low voltages on Vin, but when Vin raises, Vout raises as well. I get a nice 3.3V output until Vin is between 1.5 and 3.5V. At 5V on Vin I have almost 4.2V on Vout. Have I missed something fundamental? I thought I should be able to go up to 5.5V and still have 3.3 on Vout? My circuit is the same as in the datasheet, having 10uF on C1 and C2 and 10uH on L1. My application consumes between 1-10mA during the tests when I experienced this.

Thank's for any info about this!

  • Mikael,

The TPS61097-33 is a boost only device.  Taking VIN above its regulation voltage will cause VOUT to follow, just as you've seen.  There is a note in the APPLICATION INFORMATION section under Design Procedure that states:

The TPS61097 does not down-regulate VIN; therefore, if VIN is greater than VOUT, VOUT tracks VIN.
