6-Cell 5A LiIon Charger

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ2954, BQ2054, BQ24600

Hello,

i am currently working at designing a battery charger for charging a 6-Cell LiIon Battery pack (with built-in protection/balancing).

Target charge current is 5A, charge voltage 4.15V per Cell. Power is supplied by an off-the-shelf switching power supply, which has not been chosen yet.

Size is not critical, as is power dissipation, however high reliability and safety is.

I have been looking at the BQ2954, as well as the BQ2054, what would be the better option?

For the power stage, i was thinking about running it at fairly low frequency (80-100Khz) and use a integrated hi-side driver chip with little slower FET drive to reduce EMI related trouble (we can only use a 2-layer PCB).

  • Hi,

We have a new IC, bq246xx,  which support 6-cell Li-ion battery. It will be released at December 2009.

    bq246xx: ·        NMOS-NMOS Synchronous Buck Converter;  1.2MHz/600kHz/300kHz Switching Frequency;  ·        Stand-alone Charger for Li-Ion or Li-Polymer ·        5V-30V Input Operating Range

    ·        Support Six Battery Cells ·        Up to 10A Charge Current and Adapter Current ·        High-Accuracy Voltage and Current Regulatio

    ·        Integration: -         Automatic System Power Selection from Adapter or Battery -         Internal Loop Compensation -         Internal Soft Start

    ·        Safety Protection: -         Input Over-Voltage Protection -         Dynamic Power Management -         Battery Thermistor Sense for Hot / Cold Charge Suspend -         Battery Detection

    -         Reverse Conduction Protection Input FET -       Safety Timer -         Charger Over-Current protection -         Battery Short Protection -         Battery Over-Voltage Protection

bq2461x/630 is 4mmx4mm 20 pin QFN.  bq24600/620 is 3.5mmx3.5mm 16pin QFN which doesn't monitor input current and doesn't drive input FET and BATFET.
