TPS2511 Charging

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2511, TPS2543, TPS2546

Our customer is now studying and evaluating the TPS2511, and they have some questions.

Anyone, teach me about the following questions please.

  1. In Divide mode of TPS2511, the datasheet says one either 5W(iPhone) or 10W(iPad) USB charging schemes must be selected by changing between DP/DM and D+/D- connection.

            Can’t we use both 5W charging and 10W charging using one TPS2511 device?

            Can’t 10W charging support both iPhone(5W) and iPad(10W), setting 10W charging scheme?

     2.    - TPS2511 doesn’t support an auto-detect feature between 5W charging and 10W charging mode of divide mode, but TPS2543 does support an auto-detect feature for 5W charging and 10W charging mode.

         - TPS2511 supports 1.2V/1.2V charging scheme (for Galaxy Tab), TPS2543 doesn’t support 1.2V/1.2V charging scheme.

          Above these are right?

Kazu Ogawa

  • Your understanding of TPS2511 and TPS2543 are correct along with the devices that they support. For TPS2511, can you install 2x SPDT switch (such as 2x SN74LVC1G3157DBV or 1x TS3A24157 ) between a single TPS2511 and the USB connector? Then select between either 5W or 10W mode with the control signal.

    Also, TPS2546 will be released this month and provides advancement over even TPS2543 including support for 1.2V charging schemes. The product page is online and the datasheet will be online soon.

  • Eric,

    Thank you very much for your answer. It's very helpful.

  • Eric,

    One more question.

    I looked at PWR_TPS2511_Overview.pptx Foils in ESP, and I found the following.

    Divider 1 (5W) mode;

       - iPhone Fast Charge

       - Slow Charge (1A) to iPad/iPad2

       - Slow Charge (500mA) to some smart phones

    Divider 2 (10W) mode;

       - iPad Fast Charge

       - Slow Charge (500mA) to some smart phones

    Can’t Divider 2 (10W) mode support Fast Charge (1A) to iPhone?

    It supports 2A charge and 500mA charge?

    Best Regards,

    Kazu Ogawa

  • Note in the datasheet figured 35-38 how the data lines are reconfigured depending on whether 10 or 5W mode is needed. This means that there is not a single configuration/connection that will support fast charge for both the pad and the phone simultaneously.

    TPS2546 is nearing release and supports all of these charging modes automatically (see the product page where the DS should be available soon).

  • Eric,

    Thank you very much. I understand.
