There are protections you should add for an open circuit condition. The unclamped inductor voltage can stress the internal FET. Also would need to know the range of the loads to determine the optimal value for the inductor.

The load range ist 5 to 12 leds (cree xpe white) in series is it possible to find one inductor that fits?

Yes, Figure 4 on page 12 of data sheet. As far as the inductor value while it is best to use the inductor based on input voltage and LED string voltage you can compute the values for the extreme and pick an inductor somewhere in between and check your results. You may find that you need to iterate and test to determine impact by doing this.
