A problem about BQ500211A Demo

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ51013B, BQ500211A, BQ51013A

Hi,

I use BQ500211A demo with BQ51013B demo for some tests, they can work very well. But when BQ500211A demo is using for charging a LG Nexus4 cellphone, the LED indicate that the PMOD or FOD function is Trigger. Then charge is halt, about five seconds later charge go on, like this again and again. I can not find where the problem is.Is it the BQ500211A can not be using for LG Nexus4 cellphone for charge? What is different between PMOD and FOD? What will be different if the FOD resistor is regulated? What I can do for solving the problem? I need your help very much. Thank you.

  • It sounds like you are seeing FOD or PMOD tripping.  I am not sure if your Nexus4 phone is certified to WPC 1.0 (PMOD) or WPC 1.1. (FOD).  It is possible some of the early versions of the Nexus4 did not have final values for WPC 1.1 FOD tuning.

To work around the problem on the bq500211A EVM the loss threshold can be increased by increasing R22.  Default value is 56.2k for 400mW, see data sheet table to for other possible values.  Also removing jumper JP3 will disable both PMOD and FOD.

  • Thank you for your help. Actually I have increased R22 to the maximum value as the datasheet table list. But it does not help. I have contacted the local TI office, but they can do nothing just tell me to remove R22 to disable both PMOD and FOD. I do not think my customers will accept the answer. They think if the IC have this feature why it does not work well. May be the problem is Nexus4. But I can not approve that.

There is another question to ask you. I know that the BQ51013A have a EPT for charge done indication. But I do not know exactly the circuit connect to TS-CTRL. Should I connect this pin to a battery voltage pin that a charge IC output? Or I just connect the circuit as the BQ51013X EVM schematic?

    Thank you!
