current sensing

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UC3823A

Hi guys,

I am designing a buck regulator for battery charging. I have done quite a lot of testing on my current design and found that it gets unstabile at high voltages and light loads. The controller I use is the uc3823a HIGH-SPEED PWM CONTROLLER. I use it in voltage mode but now I also want to implement current sensing. How to do this, or is this even possible for this controller?

Thanks for replies

  • Hi Erik,

The UC3823A has a current limit input pin  that can be used to implement  a constant current charge to the battery when the battery voltage is below the voltage set point.

You would sense the battery current through a sense resistor.

1.2V is the current limit threshold voltage.

As the battery voltage rises, the converter will come out of current limit and maintain the voltage as determined by the voltage control set point
