I would not recommend using the bq2040 because it is an older device and the support for it is limited. As regards your cell configuration, do you mean you have 20 cells connected in series?

Yes, the 20 cells are connected in series. The operating voltage is in the mid 20s, but the max voltage after charge is ~29V. The battery has ~2000mAH. If any other info would help, please let me know.
The bq34z120 is your best solution for the NiMH 20s cells since you aren't going above 65 V. Our gas gauges when used with a smart charger has the ability to broadcast messages to the charger.

Thank you for the guidance. I am not seeing a BQ34Z120 on the TI website. Do you mean the BQ34Z100 or BQ34Z110?
I have a BQ34Z100EVM kit, is this the proper eval kit or should I exchange it?
