PTH12050W - Voltage margining up and down

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PTH12050W, PTH12060W

I'm working on a power distribution design which is heavily based on previous generations in which I'm using the PTH12050W to generate one of the low current rails (<5A). I would like to add a feature which will margin the output up or down by a percentage of the nominal output. The part in question does not have dedicated margin pins like others in this family.

My thoughts were to have a resistor connected in parallel to the trim resistor (switchable by a FET) and also to have a resistor and FET in series between Vout and Vadj pins on the device.

Does this work and is this the best way to go about achieving this?

  • Chris:

The power modules including PTH12050 do not have built in margining capability. The module cannot have any resistor connected  between Vout bus and the Rset adjust pin. This resitor will  affect the stability and reliability .

    1. If possible change to the PTH12060W which has built in(±)margin function

    2. Or Add in this switch control  and or FET  function with resistor set and margin resistor values required for application .

Note: not recommended for active switching of  margin   voltages >0.5% or when active power is applied to Vin
