TPS2540A current limiting at 500 mA, RLIM set to 16.9k

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2540, TPS2546

Help!   I am clearly missing something.  I copied the universal charger circuit from SLVA464C with a variable Rlim and created the attached circuit.  I cannot get the charging current to exceed 500 mA.  I've plugged into various cell phones and an iPod and the two lower current settings behave as expected - ~100mA and ~500mA, but the high current setting does not.  The 5V source is not current-limited.  It pushes 2A easily.

Any help on where to look would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

  • 1, you can check the current limit of TPS2540 is configured correctly using e-load.

    2. Please check the TPS2540 mode is set ad DCP_Auto.

    3. Then the charging current depends on the portable devices, at this moment, you can try iPhone, the charging current should be up to around 1A.

    4. Also, TPS2540 is the first generation USB charging controller, now recommend TPS2546, the DCP_Auto can support iPad/Galaxy Tab fast charge.
