REF3220 vs REF5020

What is a better choice for the reference voltage for the 16-bit ADC converter ADS8320 chip, REF5020I or REF3220 or LM4040A20?

    Looking at the ADC I would think that one of the two REF devices would be a better fit than the LM404A20. To decide between these there are a few questions that will help make the decision.

    What sort of accuracy do you need? These devices have different accuracies and in fact you can get the same device in different accuracy grades.

    What sort of temperature range will this application be used. Understanding the temperature operating range helps bring the temperature drift coefficient into perspective.


  • Dear Ryan, I am working on the design of handheld measuring devices for solar power. Will be used to outside the building. And there is a big difference in temperature.

    I would recommend looking at some information describing the characteristics of Voltage references:

    Both of the REF3220 and the REF5020 exhibit great temperature drift which appears to be an important feature in your application. While the REF3220 might have higher initial accuracy it has a large temperature coefficient and a slightly greater noise component.

    With that in mind I would think that the REF5020 high grade version would be a better solution resulting in less variation over temperature and from noise and it has better long term stability.
