TPS84320 PH connection

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS84320

Hello,

In a custom design we have detected a layout bug in realtion to the TPS84320.

The PH pins 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 17 are floating but not connected to the small copper area of the PH pin 46.

The datasheet mentions that all these pins are used for thermal relief.

Assuming that the maximum expected current consumption is about 1.5A, is there a relevant penalty with this connection??

Is it possible that with the mentioned conenction of these pins the regulator does not work properly??

Thanks in advance,

Antonio Mollfulleda.

  • Hi Antonio,

The external PH pins are connected internally on the leadframe. Connecting the pins to a copper area on the board will help with getting any heat out of the board. If the PH pins are not connected to a copper area on the PCB, the device should function properly with the only differnce being decreased thermal performance.

Is there a problem with device not functioning, or only a concern based on layout?
