Hello

I am thinking of using an LM2671 (adjustable output) to produce a battery charger powered by a solar panel.

Looking at the block diagram on page 8 of the data sheet it would seem to be ok to use the scheme shown in the

block diagram that (I think) I have included to protect both the LM2671 and the solar panel,   when the solar panel voltage falls below that of the battery ?

    This approach is fine. But you will have a fixed diode drop on your input and there will be that additional power loss because of that. You might want to have some circuitry that disconnects the solar panel when it's voltage falls below a threshold. A FET can be introduced in place of the diode and it can be driven in to saturation when you want the solar panel charging the battery.

    Yes I realise that the diode will consume some energy so I am looking into using the LTC4412 + a P channel MOSFET  which will give a drop of about 20mV and also provide a status signal to a micro controller when the switch off happens.
