What is the purpose of D5 in TPS2592 Eval Module Schematic?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2592AA

Hello,

Regarding the TPS2592AA device:
The Evaluation module user’s guide has D5 in the schematic connected to BFET & OUT pins.
This is not shown in the datasheet examples.

Could you please explain what D5 is being used for?

Thank you, Keith

  • Hi Keith,

D5 is used with blocking FETS (Q3) that have a smaller negative Vgs (abs max) than the output voltage. On the EVM, Q3 Vgs = +16V / -12V and D5 clamps the negative Vgs to a safe value. A blocking FET with Vgs = +/- 20V would not need D5.

I should have mentioned this in the EVM user guide.
