Synchronizing multiple TPS54540

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS54540

Hello,

I will be using up to 3 TPS54540 switching regulators on the one PCB for different LED voltage rails.

The datasheet indicates that the TPS54540 can be synchronised with an "external system clock".  My question is if I can use one of the TPS54540 as the master device to synchronise with one or more slave TPS54540.

What circuitry is advisable to achieve this, would I need to connect RT/CLK pin of the master device to the input of a high impedance buffer to drive the RT/CLK pin(s) of slave device(s).

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Regards,

Dean.

  • For TPS54540, the RT/CLK pin is an input only.  There is no clock output.  It may be possible to derive a system clock from the SW node waveform, but in general that is not a good idea.  The SW node tends to be noisy and the dutycycle will vary with load.  It will skip pulses with eco-mode operation as well.  I would recommend that you generate an external clock source and feed all three TPS54540 with an independent buffered clock.

  • Thanks for your response John,  I will use an independent buffered clock.
