Inquiry regarding maximum current limit on TPS54521

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS54521, TPS62180

Hello, all

Now we have one inquiry regarding maximum current limit on TPS54521 from our customer.

Please refer to the item below, and feedback us with your comment.

When referring to "ELECTRICAL CHARACTERISTICS" on datasheet page 4, the following terms which are related with current limit is defined.

High-side switch current limit threshold

Low-side switch sourcing current limit

Low-side switch sinking current limit

However, any of these does not have maximum definition.

Since our end customer requires 7A current limit for power supply in order to protect PCB, please let us clarify whether you have any maximum definition regarding these terms or not.

We thank you in advance for your information.

Best regards,

  • The current limit is typically 9 A for high side peak and 8 A for low side valley.  That means the typical load current average limit is 8.5 A typical.  It may be higher based on maximum value.  I do not have the char data available right now, but based on past experience the limit is usually symmetrical, so the max limits are probably around 11 A and 10 A respectively.  The load limits will vary between 6.5 A to 10.5 A with typical being 8.5 A.  Since the typical value iis already above 7 A, I think it will not meet your requirement.  Let me know if you want me to dig into this further.

  • What is the desired normal output current for this rail?  We have the new TPS62180 which delivers 6A and uses a hiccup current limit to reduce the average current drawn and delivered in a fault.
