BQ24041 series resistance for haradous applications

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24041

BQ24041 application will be intrinsically safe for hazardous locations, as per I.S. requirements, the battery will require a resistance in series with the Li-Ion battery (estimating 700 to 1.2ohms). Will this pose a problem for the BQ24041 chip to charge with this added resistance?

  • With a large series resistance, the voltage at OUT will reach the battery regulation voltage long before the cell is actually charged to that voltage.  The IC will be begin to taper down the charge current much earlier, resulting in a much longer charge time.  Depending on the capacity, the charge time could exceed the safety timer.
