TPS62163 Capacitor - Help needed

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS62163

HI

I would like to use the TPS62163 with Input Power 6-17V  and 500mA-900mA  with 5V Output (for sensors). I'm expecting quite a lot of noise. Noise reduction is far more important than transient response.

At the moment i have the following components:

Input Capacitor:

Murata Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors MLCC - SMD/SMT 10uF 25Volts 10% GRM31CR71E106KA12L

LC Filter:

Kemet Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors MLCC - SMD/SMT 10volts 100uF 20% C1210C107M8PACTU

Coilcraft Fixed Inductors Power Inductor 3.3 uH 5 % 2.3 A1812PS-332JLB

Resistor:

R3 Susumu Thin Film Resistors - SMD 1/10W Regular 100K ohm 0.05% 10ppm RG1608N-104-W-T1

I have read tps62163.pdf, http://www.ti.com/lit/pdf/SLVA463 and

http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/slvu483/slvu483.pdf

In the evaluation Guide (SLVU483) there are 3 additional capacitors: (C3 additional Outpu, C4 Additional Input) and C5 (68uF Tanatalum Capacitor).

I don't understand the C5 Capacitor. Is this preferable? May i use the much cheaper

AVX Tantalum Capacitors - Polymer SMD 20volts 47uF 20% ESR=70mOhms TCJX476M020R0070

Capacitor  instead the C5 68uF Tantalum?

May i improve the LC filter if i replace the 100uF Ceramic with an Tantalum and ceramic in parallel? For example 100uF tantalum and 10uF Ceramic?

Thank you very much for help and education!

Andy

  • You have picked a good device for low noise.  DCS-Control was specifically designed for this.

Depending on what exactly 'low noise' means in your application, you might add a ferrite bead on the output.

I would also recommend a 10uF ceramic on the output in parallel with the 100uF.

The tantalum input cap is just present to decouple the EVM from an input impedance that is present.  Such impedance comes from the wires from a lab supply to the EVM.  Its value and specs are entirely application dependent.  There's nothing critical about the one used on the EVM.

  • Thank's

I'm consider also an 10uF ceramic in parallel. Maybe even an additonal 1uF. I'm just looking for a simulation software to evaluate that...
