I'm using a bq34z950 in several of my products to help streamline design work. Some of my customer's products use the DQ, others use SMBus, making the z950 a perfect part. I just noticed in the data sheet, on page 17 (Table 2), that the DQ command set doesn't include the same commands as in the bq2050. Somehow my message was truncated.

In a previous thread (link) the bq2050 data sheet was shown to indicate the original DQ registers would be available. However, the new bq34z950 data sheet doesn't have that register table.

I need this compatibility and I'm hoping the table was left out of the data sheet for the z950.

The bq34z950 should be compatible with the bq2050. That was the main reason for creating the device.

I believe that, it just made me have a small panic attack when I didn't see the bq2050 register table in the bq34z950 data sheet.

It appears that Mike Ewer is saying what I was concerned about, the bq2050 data is NOT available on the bq34z950.

My setup is a bq20z95 EVM. The bq20z95 has been removed and a bq34z950 has been installed. The bqEval software sees the '950 and SMBus communication is flawless.

On the EVM I had R14, D2, and R35 removed. I ran a jumper wire from pin 1 of D2 to the pad of R35 that is connected to Pin 1 of TB3. I have verified I have signal clear up to Pin 16 on the '950. I am using an EV2400, connected to the "HDQ" port (Port 3) with SDA and VSS connected to the EVM.

When I go to the DQ Data page on the bqEval software, all I get is "Err" in all fields.

Where do I go from here?

The bq34z950 should have most of the bq2050 registers.

Have you tried with an EV2300. The EV2400 has only recently been update to officially support HDQ, so it may not have support in the EV2400 you're using.

I looked at the signal with my scope, the Break, Break Recovery and other signals were the correct timing for DQ. That was coming from the EV2400.

Are you testing this with a bq20z95 EVM or are you using a custom board? If using an EVM, did you make any modifications to the HDQ pin. It won't work as is without a few modifications.
