LP3988-load capacitance clarification

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LP3988

Hi,

I am going to use the LP3988 device for my new design. In LP3988 datasheet, they have given the output capacitance is 1uf(typ) to 20uf(max).

My question is,the output rail capacitance(including other device decap's) shouldnt exceed the maximum limit(20uf) or its required for output stability purpose?. Please clarify.

Design Requirement:

Input Voltage – 3.3V

Output Volatage – 2.5V

Output Current – 50.4mA

Total output capacitance - 55uf

Thanks,

Jeyalakshmi

  • Using 55uF total for output capacitance does not present any specific problem for the LP3988. I presume the net capacitor characteristics will otherwise meet the LP3988 needs.

Be aware that the increased output capacitance will take a bit longer to charge at power-up than the rated 1uF value, so some of the typical performance timing diagrams for power-up will not be accurate.
