Half bridge converter VS LLC resonant converter

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC3806, UC3846, UCC29950, UCC25600

Hello Sir,

My self Mahesh. We want to develope 24V/30Amp power supply design.

We already work in flyback as well as forward converter.

Now for this higher power rating I choose half bridge topology but in power esim site I found LLC resonant converter is more efficient than normal HALF BRIDGE topology,

SO my question is I already choose UC3846/UCC3806 for half bridge converter application so is it possible work this ICs in resonant LLC converter?

If YES then is there any application note for this.

If NOT then is there other IC which has Pulse by Pulse current limit, shutdown pin functions.(As in UC3846)

  • Hello Mahesh,

To the best of my knowledge there is no LLC controller available with Pulse by Pulse current limit.

The current waveshape in an LLC converter is sinusoidal and therefore it is not possible just to place a comparator and terminate the ON time early.

UCC29950 is a Combi CCM PFC + LLC controller. It includes three level current limit. A single cycle of excessive amplitude current will cause the LLC converter to stop switching. This is not the same as Pulse by Pulse current limit.

You can find details of this part and Application Notes/Eval boards on the TI Web.

    I hope this helps.

  • Thank you very much for replying.

Ok if there is no pulse by pulse current limit then ok I will limit current from secondary side by changing feedback.

But I need shutdown pin compulsory, So is there any resonant converter because i dont need PFC stage. I dont need more complications.

  • Hello Sir

Can any body tell me if I want 24V/30A output at 230VAC input then what will be the approx.  difference in efficiency in half bridge and LLC half bridge.

  • The UCC25600 is an LLC controller only.
