LM1117 - tantal kondensator instead of ceramic

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM1117

Hello,

One of our customers uses the LM1117-3.3V.

He asked me why are tantal kondensator recommended and not ceramic?

It’s not the low ESR, is it possible to take a ceramic and a serial resistor with 1-2 Ohms?

Vin: 5V

Vout : 3,3V

Iout: ca. 150-350mA

BR,

Meir.

  • At the time of time LM1117 launch, high capacitance, high voltage, ceramics were not readily available.

Ceramic capacitor technology has improved over the last 15 years.

Yes, you can simulate Tantalum capacitor ESR by adding low value series resistance to a ceramic capacitor.

Keep in mind that the capacitance value of ceramic capacitor (MLCC) needs to be de-rated for the applied DC voltage. See the manufacturers’ datasheet.
