I don't say this is the best solution but a device TLC5922 is a constant current driver with 7bit DAC.
It has 16ch of 80mA outputs and these outputs can be paralleled (= 16x80 = 1.28A).
If this idea works, please check TLC59xx LED drivers with a feature "dot correction" for more variations.
