LMZ23610 Max V

A customer has a question.

"I know that the recommended is 36VDC maximum while absolute maximum is 40VDC. Is absolute maximum referring to surge voltage? If not the what is the maximum surge voltage at the input that LM23610 can handle without damage?"

My informal definition has been that the 36V Max is saying the device will operate per the datasheet up to 36V but when absolute Max are exceeded, i.e. >40V, then the device could be damaged or may not operate per the d/s. (With non-destructive behavior in the region 36V-40V when the device is restored to not exceed the 36V.)

Is there a more formal definition I should share with the customer?

  • Your definition is very good.  Up to 36V the device will be within spec. Between 36V and 40V the device will function but may not be in spec.

Beyond 40V the device may be damaged.  Abs max is usually DC.  The device might survive a spike above Abs max, but we can not guarantee anything or say anything about the duration of the spike.
