TPS2592BA gone NRND, recommend replacement

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2592BA, TPS2592AA, TPS2592AL, TPS2592BL, TPS2592ZA, TPS25910, TPS25940

Hi,

I have a recent design in production that uses the TPS2592BA (the design was done last year and production is now in process!). It has just gone not recommended for new designs. While I understand this situation, I would like to know what replacement device do you recommend for this part. My specifications are:

- Adjustable current limit in the range from 2A - 3A

- Vin: 3V - 10vV

- Overvoltage clamp < 6V (or similar)

- Similar ON-resistance: 28mOhm

- Low part count: In my design only the Rlim resistor was necessary.

- Output ramp voltage control (dV/dt)

- The thermal foolback characteristic is highly desirable.

- The fast trip comparator characteristic is highly desirable (provides fast protection = 500ns aprox)

I will highly appreciate your recommendations on a replacement device. Also, I would like to know better the details on the timing regarding the availability of this device supporting current customers (like us!).

Thanks TI Team!

  • Hi Juan,

For new designs, recommended pin to pin, drop-in replacement for TPS2592BA is TPS259231.

The new device can support load current in the range of 1A to 5A and meets your requirement of fast trip comparator characteristic. Fast trip comparator response time is 300ns typical for TPS259231. The device is in production, samples and EVMs are also available.

Here are the p2p, drop-in replacements.

    12V: TPS2592AA  TPS259241
    12V: TPS2592AL  TPS259240
    5V: TPS2592BA  TPS259231
    5V: TPS2592BL  TPS259230
    20V: TPS2592ZA  TPS259271
    20V: TPS2592ZL  TPS259270

  • Hi Venkata,

Thanks for your reply. I have several questions anyways:

    1) When was the TPS259231 released?

    2) Is it readily available in mass volume in the Chinese market?

    3) For how long can I still count on the TPS2592BA to be available in volume? (we need to make verification and testing with the TPS259231 before making the replacement) We can discuss this in a private message if necessary.

    4) For us to better understand the replacement part, is the TPS259231 a "totally different" device from the TPS2592BA? Looking at the datasheet of both devices it looks that the TPS259231 is the exact same as TPS2592BA with some  slight improvements/changes in several characteristics here and there. Can you please comment on this more broadly? This can give us a better idea on how extensive validation we need to do.

    5) Not related to the previous devices, but yes to another recommended part. We are using the TPS25910 in a product, would you recommend a replacement device for this? We are looking at the same protection (and self protection) functionality but with a much lower quiscent current (The TPS25910 is around 4.5mA!!!):

    Input voltage: 5 - 20V

    Quiscent Current < 1mA

Current limit adjustable in the range: 3 - 5A

    Adjustable Output Voltage Ramp Time

    Thermal Shutdown Protection

SOA protection (highly desirable but not hard requirement, TPS25910 has it)

Low part count (TPS25910 uses only 1 resistor).

It would be desirable for it to have real-world output ESD protection (that complies with IEC-61000-4-2 or similar, for example). This is not a requirement.

  • Hi Juan,

    Please see the answers here:

    1) When was the TPS259231 released?

TPS259231 was released in August 2015.

    2) Is it readily available in mass volume in the Chinese market?

Yes. Available world wide with standard lead time.

    3) For how long can I still count on the TPS2592BA to be available in volume? (we need to make verification and testing with the TPS259231 before making the replacement) We can discuss this in a private message if necessary.

Can you please send an email to venkata.nandam@ti.com, I will forward your question to business unit.

TPS259231 is exactly same and direct drop-in replacement for TPS2592BA. If you have evaluated TPS2592BA, no separate evaluation is required to replace it with TPS259231. If needed, we can share NRND presentation material in a separate email.

    5) Not related to the previous devices, but yes to another recommended part. We are using the TPS25910 in a product, would you recommend a replacement device for this? >>>We have low IQ devices TPS25940/2/4 with input voltage range from 2.7V to 18V. Is it okay to limit the input voltage to 18V?

For 20V max operating voltage, TPS25910 is better device with typical quiescent current of 3.3mA.

Normally our devices are rated for HBM +/-2.5KV or CDM +/-500V. To support IEC ESD, external protection devices may be required.
