LM3401 Clarification

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM3401

I am Attempting to use the LM3401 for a light project i am working on. I have gone thru the data sheet and done some calculations for my scenario and just want to clarify that what i am trying to do is within the suitable range for the device. On the Ti website it says the LM3401 can run up to a Max of 3A output. Im trying to run it at 2A, is that acceptable? The data sheet itself is a little vague on the subject.

Some extra info, i am using 2 CR123 batteries in parallel for my supply, so 6V. And i am trying to light a single Cree Xlamp XP-L. Which has a typical forward voltage of 2.95 @ 1A and a max current rating of 3A.
