bq20z60-r1 (slus991-december 2009) application schematic

In the application schematic, near TB4 and J1 you will find G1, G3, G5 and G6. Are these spark gaps? If they are, would there be any reason to not use a tvs diode or a sidactor?

  • I haven't checked the schematic but a spark gap can help lower the power requirements for any other spike-suppression components downstream. And for no cost.

Letting the gap bring the voltage down to a lower level so a smaller TVS, or other component, means less work to do to suppress the spike. This lets you save money and/or increase the reliability of your design.
