TPS2513

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2513, TPS65286, TPD2E001

Our USB charger uses TPS65286, TPS2513 & TPS2E001. How do I protect the design from 'USB KIll" devices which puts -200VDC on DP & DM lines? These USB KILL devices are now commercially available. They use VBUS voltage to charge a capacitor to 200Volts DC. Once the capacitor is charged, it is connected to DP & DM lines.

  • Do you know that with the TPD2E001 (IEC ESD protection device), the USB Kill device will still damage TPS2513? If so, you will need a protection solution with a higher energy rating. For that you will need to know what the capacitor value is in the kill device and then select appropriate TVS power rating to use on the data lines.

If you can order the kill device, then take it apart and measure the HV capacitor value inside.

  • Thanks Eric. Yes I knew just TPD2E001 will not protect TPS2513. I have ordered a USB Kill to check the capacitors used. TVS may or may not survive the energy. TVS power ratings are generally specified for 10/1000 μs or 8/20 waveforms. I might have to use a crowbar circuit.
