TPS2541 output Cap question

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2541

Hi,

As in our datasheet, the output cap is 150uF. Can we use a smaller cap for this? How to choose the value of the cap?

  • Hi JW,

We put 150uF on most EVMs to comply with the USB downstream facing port of a hub (CHPB = 120uF minimum). You can think of this as a hub system requirement too where some of the capacitance is from the IN pin of the load switch and the rest is at the OUT pin. When the load switch is on, you can add the 5V output capacitance and TPS2541 OUT pin capacitance in parallel.

For a minimum OUT capacitance value, consider if the load has transient characteristics which might cause Vout to go negative. Having a 10uF ceramic capacitor at VBUS is usually good enough.
