Generally speaking, that is the value proposition for this architecture type. You can get good transient performance with relatively small values of output capacitor. What performance specification is driving you to larger values? That being said, the the general limitation is you do not want to have your LC corner frequency be too low relative to the internal ripple injection zero. I have successfully used up to 220 uF of output capacitance. You need to be aware of the ESR zero frequency if you use a special polymer type. Since there is no average model for these devices, you will need to check your loop bandwidth characteristics on a modified EVM.

I would be inclined to look at a current or voltage control mode device with external compensation. What is the input voltage range, output voltage and load current required?

You might want to consider TPS54620 for 5 A and TPS54320 for the lower currents. These are extremely popular solutions.
