BQ25071-Q1: Question about ISET if set on High current what happens when power is lower than ISET

Part Number: BQ25071-Q1

Hello,

Looking on the bq25071-Q1, I have a LiFePo4 3300mAH Battery 3.2V with cahrging float at 3.6V, also I have system load of 340mA

I was wondering if I set ISET for 1000mA Charging and leave it set as this, what will happen if the charger IC is connected to a USB power which is only providing:

5V at 100mA

or

5V at 500mA

or

5V at 1500mA

Am I correct in thinking that the Charger IC will take what it can and pass it onto the battery and switch off the system load if its too little?

Best regards

Mo

  • The bq25071-Q1 is not a charger with power path. As you can see from the application diagram in the datasheet, the load is connecting in parallel with the battery. The IC does not have separate control over system load and battery charging.

In the case 5V100mA, the load will take all 100 mA current and also discharging the battery to support the load.

In the case of 5V500mA, the load will take what it needs and the rest goes to the battery.
