TPS63024: About input capacitor

Hi Team,

We understand that the recommended input capacitor is at least 10uF of ceramic capacitor.

However, our customer would like to exchange the input capacitor from ceramic to Polymer.

Because, according to our customer, " Sound squeal" occurs by ceramic capacitor.

[F38 Series (Polymer capacitor)]

http://www.mouser.com/ds/2/40/AVX_F38%20DTSH%2007_16-974524.pdf

[Conditions]

Vin= 2.5 to 4.2V

Vo= 3.3V

Io = 0 to 500mA

Cout =47uF×2

Cin=10uF (Polymer type) + 1uF(ceramic type)

We have a question.

We guess that the input voltage ripple increase if ESR of input capacitor increase by” F38 Series”.

Then, is there the possibility that a device fails?

And, could you please let us know if you have any concern?

Regards,

Kanemaru

  • what capacitor size was used when they heard the sound?
    Was the customer able to hear the sound on the EVM too?
    As you suggested, I think using a polymer capacitor is a good solution to mitigate this effect, I would recommend to place the 1uF ceramic cap the closest possible to input.

    Using capacitor with higher ESR make the power stage more sensitive.
    what is the load profile?
    Is it possible to use polymer capacitor with lower ESR? or
    Is it possible to place 2 capacitors in parallel at the input to reduce the total ESR?
  • Hi Sabrina-san,

    Thank you for your reply.

    Unfortunately, I can’t get the detail information.

    However, they were able to cancel " Sound squeal " by using "Polymer capacitor" and this device does stable operation.
