BQ20Z95: Whether it is gas guage IC or charger IC

Whether BQ20Z95 only a gas guaging with protection IC or it can also charge Li-Ion batteries? How can I get the evaluation kit for it? I found it no longer manufactured.

Hello,

It is only a gas gauge, if you want to charge battery, you need to use a charger IC. The EVM is still in ti store.

Thanks for your reply. I am using a 3P4S Li-Ion battery i.e; 4 series cell with capacity of 7.8 A and want to charge it with BQ24600 by adjusting the charge current as 3 A . When I am connecting the battery directing it charges upto 16.6V. But when I am connecting pcb of bq20z95 it doesn't allows the charging. I have a doubt that is the bq20z95 requires SM bus authentication to allow charging? Can we test the bq20z95 IC without software interfacing?

Hi Radha,
You can communicate with bq20z95 on your PCB via SMBus using your host MCU on the PCB, please see attached application report for guidance on how to read/write and program gauge parameters . Another option is that you can also use EV2300 or EV2400 with bqStudio software at ti.com, I recommend EV2400 if you consider buying one, to communicate with bq20z90 gauge.

Thanks for your reply. I am sorry for the delay. Could you explain what conditions makes bq20z95 to disable charge permanently and can we overwrite the fault flag bits so that bq20z95 can allow charging.

Hi Radha,
Are you seeing a specific fault?
bq20z95 will resume charging after charging fault conditions are no longer in place, also you can refer to section 2.4.10 page 48 of TRM for further details.

Hi Haidar,

I have a few sets of Li-Ion battery packs i.e; 4 series cell with capacity of 6600 mAh . Part number is NL2024HD. The battery pack consists of a protection circuit of bq20z95. I kept the battery for charging and it works fine. The battery gets charged properly. But I tried to make a similar battery pack by my own. Replacing the NL2024HD with my own battery pack and connected the bq20z95 circuit to it. But the protection circuit does not allows the battery pack to charge. I thought that there is fault in my battery pack so that the IC disables charging. so I again connected the circuit to previous battery pack NL2024HD but I found that the circuit disables charging for original battery pack too. Could you explain the following queries.

1) What makes the IC to disable the charge?
2) Can we know why the IC disables the charge by reading the PF flags status?
3) What are the main specifications for the IC to allow the charging?

Hi Radha,
Where is your original battery pack comes from? if it is from a manufacturer, then its most likely to be sealed by an authentication key programmed into protection circuit of the original pack and we cannot unseal it, so when you switched the original pack the bq20z95 may become sealed and that's may be the cause for not charging.

Hi Haidar,

What you said is one of the cause but is that problem still exists even after I replaced the original pack. The original battery is from a manufacturer of medical applications. can't we reprogram the authentication key?

Hi Radha,
unfortunately manufacturers change the default authentication key that comes with the device form our factory and there is no way for us around that.

Hi Haidar,

I have EV2300 interface module for bq20z95 EVM. Now I want to connect it for bq20z95 PCB which I got in original battery pack. I installed the software drivers for EV2300 in 64 bit windows 7 PC. But the bq20z95 PCB was not recognized by EV2300. I just connect SMBD, SMBC and VSS of baq20z95 PCB to EV2300 conncetor.

Hi Radha,
Please install ev2300 driver in the link below:

Also make sure to run the installing as an administrator and the ev2300 should recognize the gauge.

Please use baEASY software, bqstudio software does not support bq20z95 gauge.

Hi Radha,

bqEASY should recognize your gauge as you start the software and you should not select the gauge from the list as you showing. Did you install EV2300 driver for windows 7 ?

Please install it as an administrator and make sure your gauge is connected to your battery, hope this would help.

Hi Haidar,
Please suggest how to interface bq20z95 to PC through ev2300. If I can't make it through ev2300 what should I do? Can I return ev2300 to TI and get an alternate?

Hi Radha,

Your installation looks OK and yes we had issue with EV2300 Win7 64bit driver. I would suggest uninstall both driver and the bqEASY restart your computer and try installing it again if you have't done so already, also you may want to try installing it with software on a different computer if you have access to another one. As for returning your EV2300, I am not sure about that you may have to contact TI Store if you bought it from there.

Hi Haidar,

Iam working with bq20z65 IC at present. By communicating bq20z65 with ev2300 I can read the flag status successfully. The problem is when I replace the existing battery with a new one , I can still read the flag status but bq20z65 doesnot allow charging. Iam attaching the screen shot for better understanding. How can I clear PF status. Please suggest me as soon as possible.

Please refer to bq20z95 TRM page 60 (Security) for further details on how to UNSEAL FULL ACCESS the device, also could you please send gg file of your setting and screenshot of device registers status?

Hi Radha,
You will need configure the IC, if you replaced the IC with a new bq20z95.
Also, I don't recommend removing or inserting a new IC with the cells attached as this can damage the IC and also cause safety issues.
