BQ78PL114: Fully Charged Flag always on

Part Number: BQ78PL114

Hello,

We currently using the BQ78PL114 battery management chip, however we see that the 'Fully Charged' and 'Terminate Charge' flag is always on even though when the absolute/relative state of charge is 2%.   Below is a screen shot of the data info where it shows the above mentioned flags are always on. From my understanding the fully charge flag should only come on when the state of charge is close to 100% and the terminate charge will occur when the battery is completely charged.

Can somebody please assist me with this, I'm not sure why the 'Fully Charged' and 'Terminate Charge' flag is always on and if there is an issue, how does one fix it.

Cheers,

Nilesh

  • Hi Nilesh,
Your understanding for fully charged (FC) and terminate charge (TC) flags are correct, but your screen capture show them as green which means they are cleared and not set. Green means (clear) or (0), while Red means (set) or (1), they will be set (Red) when SOC is 98% (to set FC Flag) and then SOC is 100% (to set TC flag) while charging, as you can see, your remaining capacity flag is Red (set) since your remaining capacity is below (560 mAh/10mWh ) default alarm threshold.

  • Hi Haider,

You mention when the SOC is 98% the FC flag will be set(Red), just want to confirm the SOC which you referring to is absolute, am I correct?

  • Hi Nilesh,
We do not called absolute, but it is the filtered SOC.

  • Hello Haidor,

OK. I'm still not at ease, the setup that we currently have is that we have a micro-controller that checks the TCA/Terminate Charge flag, if the TCA flag is on/1 then the micro-controller will notify us, if the TCA flag is off/0 then the TCA flag should not notify us.But whats happening is that the micro-controller is continuously notifying us that the TCA flag is on, even when it is in a clear state as you mentioned it still notifies us. Another thing that is a bit confusing is that the TCA Set/Clear SOC Threshold is set to -1 which means it is disabled but the terminate charge is in a clear state as shown below. Shouldn't the Terminate charge flag be greyed out if the TCA Set/Clear SOC Threshold is disabled? .

    Cheers,

    Nilesh

  • Nilesh,

Let me clarify a couple of things. The TCA set GREEN means that the alarm is active and I think that you have figured this out. Setting the TCA Set SOC Threshold parameter does not disable the feature completely. It will still set the flag at charge termination. If the TCA Clear SOC Threshold parameter is set to -1, then the flag will not get cleared. It needs to be set to a percentage, maybe 95%. Please try this and see if it helps.

  • Thanks Tom, worked great.
